What is Midsummer?

Scandinavians call it "the day that never ends." It's Midsummer, or summer solstice, the longest day of the year. In Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland, it's a day of non-stop celebration.

Highlights

Vasa's indoor center (air-conditioned), the covered pavilion, and outdoor bar and stugan, or food kiosk, are open all day.

Vasa's annual Barnensdag (Children's Day) combines with the Midsummer Celebration this year. Barnensdag has been an annual event since June, 1960. Children ages 5-13 and Vasastjarnan, the Junior Club, perform folk dances for parents, family, and guests. Both clubs have performed Lucia Celebrations since 1959.

SWEA NJ again is assembling the Maypole on the site around noon and will raise and lead the audience in the singing and dancing after the opening ceremony. SAHS thanks SWEA NJ for their many years of continuing this Midsummer tradition.

Vendors will offer beautiful items from Scandinavia and from talented local artisans. For more information on being a vendor, click here to contact our chairperson via email: sahsvendor@yahoo.com or download the vendor application and send it to us. Food vendors, please contact us at 908-342-4296.

Our SAHS raffle tickets for fantastic prizes are for offered throughout the day.

The Midsummer Dance begins at 5 p.m., featuring music and performances by local entertainers. Vasa's kitchen will offer delicious meatball dinners.

TITTI SJÖBLOM & EHRLING ELIASSON

Titti and Ehrling are from Sweden. Titti is the daughter of Alice Babs, one of Sweden’s most famous vocalists from the era of the 1940s to the 1970s. Titti started singing at the age of two with her mother and made records and appearances on radio and television throughout her childhood. Her first stage appearance was at Johanneshov in Stockholm where she sang “Droppen Titti & EhrlingDripp” in the same gala as Sammy Davis Jr. and Ingrid Bergman. Her second appearance was at “Scandinavium” in Gothenburg as Maria Magdalena in “Jesus Christ Super Star.”

Titti’s musicality and versatility as an artist have led to performances of everything from children’s songs to jazz, gospel, ballads, and pop music. Together with her husband, guitarist and vocalist Ehrling Eliasson, she has been  touring throughout Sweden and abroad, often in collaboration with choirs, orchestras, brass, and string bands. Most of the time it is their two voices and the guitar that performs at many different venues such as churches, concert halls, stadiums, business conventions, festivals, and more.

Ehrling is a true Norlander, from  Ångermanland. He is a brilliant guitarist who plays everything from jazz and ballads to pop and rock. Sometimes he appears solo as a toastmaster and entertainer, and combines his own songs with well known melodies. They will be singing in both English and Swedish.

Two instructors from Singing Strings Institute in Minnesota will briefly play music before the movie: Helina Leino-Pakola, concert violinist and twin sister Hilpi Leino-Kantola, a concert pianist.
